The newly redesigned and upgraded 2018 Subaru WRX and its high performance variant, the WRX STI, broke cover today boasting a more purposeful look and refined features than ever. The idea here is to offer you a rally car that you can live with day to day, and they seem to have come up with a pretty convincing package.
Well, the thing is, with the old rival Mitsubishi Lancer Evo now gone there really is no direct competition for the WRX and that might result in Subaru getting a bit lazy with the new versions of the car. So, while the 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI do get revised headlights and grilles, there really isn’t anything that new about either. Not that we’re complaining, because the existing offer is solid enough.
The STI version of the new WRX comes with a proven turbocharged 305-hp boxer engine the output of which is governed in the 2018 model by a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) updated with a fully electronic control system to vary the front/rear torque distribution for quicker and smoother response. Other highlights include limited-slip helical front, Torsen rear differentials, Brembo performance braking system now with yellow-finished 6-piston front and 2-piston rear monoblock calipers along with larger, cross-drilled rotors, 19 inch wheels and Recaro seats.
The standard 2018 Subaru WRX comes with a 268-hp Direct-Injection Turbocharged Boxer engine, symmetrical AWD, upgraded interior with premium soft-touch materials and updated dash and door trim, LEd headlights with active steering function, 18 inch wheels, upgraded infotainment system, and an available Performance Package, which includes Recaro performance seats and red-finished brake calipers with Jurid high-performance pads.
