Don’t read too much into this, but the head of Peugeot design has recently penned a modern-day Peugeot 205 GTI. He maintains this was a fun project he did for himself to blow off some steam with, but we won’t be surprised at all if a few years from now they actually bring back the icon.
Resurrecting iconic models is an established practice among car makers, but producing Peugeot 205 GTI presents Peugeot with a couple of tiny problems. For one thing, they have a naming system that doesn’t allow going back, you see. They are now at 208 with their hatchbacks, so they can’t jump back and make a 205 all of a sudden. Then there is the question of marketing, and whether they’re going to make or lose money on such a project.

Of course, both of those problems can be circumvented by making this modern Peugeot 205 GTI a special and strictly limited edition car based on the current 208 GTI platform. And we really do hope to see this thing happen, not just because the 205 GTI is quite possibly the best and coolest hot hatch of all time (along with the original Golf GTI) but also because we really like what we are seeing here in these sketches. This re-imagined 205 GTI looks crisp and modern, and yet true fans can instantly recognize the clues from the original subtly integrated into its design.
