All Volvo Cars to Get an Electric Motor from 2019

Volvo believe the end of the reign of internal combustion is (almost) upon us and they want to begin phasing them out with a bold plan. Beginning from 2019 every single production Volvo will have an electric motor attached to its combustion engine. That means an entire range of hybrids and pure EVs.

And that will be definitely be the tipping point for the internal combustion engine (ICE) on its way to extinction. Volvo has already proved they can make some mean hybrids with amazing power and astonishing efficiency. Now imagine they put all of their focus on it. Of course, it’ll be a gradual shift, with the gasoline cars giving way to mild-hybrid cars, then plug-in hybrids, and then fully electric ones. The video below explains this with some cool graphics:

Volvo has even revealed a little of bit their future plans, confirming the production of  five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar. These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models, representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Mr Samuelsson, the company’s president and chief executive. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”
